Year 5 Curriculum

Class Teachers - Mrs K. Johnson

Teaching Assistant - Mrs P. Strike

Spring Term 2018

Our topic for the Spring Term is ‘Friend or Foe’, and Yr 5 will focus on ‘Maya Civilization’ and ‘Mountains’ in our history and geography lessons. In English, we shall again be writing poetry, with a focus on narrative poetry, and we shall also be reading a fiction book set in Beirut, titled ‘Oranges in No man’s Land’. Science will focus on types of change and forces.

Homework will be handed out as usual on Fridays and should be handed in the following Wednesday. The tasks set will build on the skills the children have worked on during the week in Maths, English, Science or Topic work. Spellings and arithmetic will also be included and the activities should take about 30-40 minutes to complete. It would be helpful if you could make a brief comment about how your child has coped with the activity each week so that additional support can be provided if required. If you are at all concerned about the homework, please have a word with me, and I will endeavour to help. If you are finding it hard to fit homework in at home, remember that Homework Club runs after school on Mondays, where staff are available to support your child with their tasks in these sessions.

In addition to the homework tasks, could I please encourage you to continue to read with your children on a daily basis, questioning them on what they read, and ensuring that they understand the vocabulary being used? Children are rewarded for regular reading through the reading challenge which continues in Year 5.

Our times tables superhero challenge also continues – a list is on the wall which the children need to add their name to and they will be tested. We will be working on them in class, but please take advantage of some of the activities available on line, in particular Times Table Rock Stars, which will support your child’s learning. Should you need a reminder about your child’s login details for this site, please let me know and I shall find it for you.

PE will now take place on Friday afternoon with the Sport’s Coach, so please make sure that your child has suitable kit, including sports shoes suitable for outdoor use, and a hoodie in case it is cold. All students should be able to remove their own earrings for these sessions. Please could you also make sure that long hair is tied back and that socks are provided for the girls when they wear tights.
