Spring Term 2018
Our topic this term is ‘Heroes and Villains’ For the first half term, in English, we will be comparing traditional tales with alternative versions and looking closely at ‘good’ and ‘bad’ character descriptions. Our maths focus is multiplication and division, moving onto statistics.
In the second half of the term our English focus will be poetry, before we move onto a ‘delicious’ non-fiction unit called ‘Does Chocolate grow on Trees.’ In maths we will be exploring shape in greater depth and then using fractions.
The children are eagerly anticipating their topic subjects this term. For the first half we are learning simple computer programming techniques with ‘Turtle’ logo and the ‘Scratch’ programmes. In music the children will be learning about composing; using their bodies as ’instruments’ and by practising with the real thing! During the second half of term our History focus is ‘Nurturing Nurses’ and in design and technology we will be making ‘sensational salads.’ The science focus is animal habitats, followed by, growing plants. In R.E we will be learning about the Bible and some of the stories in it, including the Easter story and the history of Mothering Sunday.
Our P.E day continues to be on Friday. The children will be taught hockey skills in the first half of term and dance in the second. A reminder that indoor kit comprises blue shorts, a white t-shirt and black plimsolls. An outdoor kit is important, as, weather permitting; we will be going outside, so please include jogging bottoms and top. Trainers or plimsolls may be worn outdoors. Please label your child’s kit as well as their school uniform. It is important that P.E kit stays in school so that it can be used if your child should need a change of clothes for any reason. As the weather is still likely to be cold, girls, who are wearing tights, need to be provided with a pair of socks for PE.
For health and safety reasons, long hair must be tied back. Please ensure that earrings are removed on PE days. Local Authority Health and Safety states that children cannot participate in PE activities with them in and P.E is a vital part of your child’s learning.
Children should be provided with water bottles, which they will have access to throughout the day. Sports type lids are preferable, as there is less potential for spillage. Only plain water should be provided.
Details will be given to you ahead of the pool opening. Thank you for your patience.
Show and Tell
The children love this time, and with your support we will continue to give opportunities for show and tell on Fridays. This term we request that no toys are brought in. Instead we would like awards or exciting family news (maybe with a photo). There will also be times when we request something related to the curriculum. For example: This week (Friday 19th January) your child can bring in any book that is special to them, so that we can build understanding about the importance of books, and relate this to our R.E learning.
